Advocacy group puts federal spending search tool online

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

By Jenny Mandel
Tuesday marked the launch of a new federal spending search Web site, designed to provide simple, one-stop visibility into most contracts and grants issued by federal agencies.

The search tool, located at file://www.FedSpending.org/, was built by advocacy group OMB Watch in about six months for a price tag of just under $200,000, according to the group. It includes many of the functionalities that Congress ordered the federal government to develop under the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act, which President Bush signed into law last month.

“When you buy something at the store, you get a receipt,” said OMB Watch director Gary Bass. “FedSpending.org is that receipt for government spending — we can examine it and see just what kind of deal we’re getting.”

More Welfare, More Poverty

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Last year, the federal government spent more than $477 billion on some 50 different programs to fight poverty. That amounts to $12,892 for every poor man, woman, and child in this country. And it does not even begin to count welfare spending by state and local governments. For all the talk about Republican budget cuts, spending on these social programs has increased an inflation-adjusted 22 percent since President Bush took office.

Despite this government largesse, 37 million Americans continue to live in poverty. In fact, despite nearly $9 trillion in total welfare spending since Lyndon Johnson declared War on Poverty in 1964, the poverty rate is perilously close to where it was when we began, more than 40 years ago.

Goodby U.S.–Hello North American Union

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

Okay, now I’m scared. My bullshit meter went into the red when I first heard mention about President Bush’s attempt to create a North American Union (NAU), which would merge the United States with Canada and Mexico. I thought, “you gotta be kidding.”

Then I did a little research, and I’ll share with you some links to get you started on your own journey of disbelief. You will gain a better understanding of why Mr. Bush is so adamant about granting “a path to citizenship” for illegal aliens, even though the vast majority of his own constituents oppose it. And some of his other insane actions are beginning to make more sense when placed in context of his new North American Union.

For starters, read these two brief articles:

Author and researcher Jerome Corsi is engaged in ongoing investigative reporting regarding the emerging NAU. Listen to the interview where he discusses his research (http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/Interview_Corsi.html) and then check out these government Web sites if you wonder if this is for real:

  • Security and Prosperity Partnership (U.S. Dept. of Commerce) at http://www.spp.gov (have a look at EACH link in the site’s nav panel to learn who are the learders and the working groups behind this)
